ABSTRACT

Genetics is a rapidly evolving area of medicine and is so much more directed than the exercise GPs do as part of a cardiovascular risk assessment. The genetics service would see a wide range of cases from antenatal counselling to children with problems that may be genetic in origin, through to adults for predictive testing of late-onset disorders. The genetics service would see a wide range of cases from antenatal counselling to children with problems that may be genetic in origin, through to adults for predictive testing of late-onset disorders. Family history cancer screening is specifically related to breast and bowel cancer at present, although reasons to involve a genetic team would be three or more relatives with a tumour at the same site (ovary, prostate, pancreas, melanoma, thyroid, sarcoma), or multiple primary cancers in one individual.
