ABSTRACT

John Bowlby is the proponent of attachment theory. Ainsworth identified four types of attachment behaviour - secure, anxious-avoidant, anxious-resistant and disorganised. The Closer look box describes the Strange Situation Experiment developed by Ainsworth and used to identify these attachment subtypes. Main developed an attachment interview used on adults to enable the interviewer to predict their attachment behaviour in childhood. The interviewer focuses on how the adult is able to recall childhood memories. Mahler's separation individuation theory highlights the stages through which a child passes in being able to develop a sense of identity distinct from the mother. Piaget is the main proponent of this theory. It consists of four stages: sensorimotor, pre-operational, concrete operational and formal operational. Kohlberg is the main proponent of moral development.
