ABSTRACT

The programme director is concerned on two grounds: the first is that SE is involved in risk-taking behaviour and the second is that she appears to have impaired insight. The risks are probably greater than she states, and there is evidence from peers and colleagues that her performance is affected, largely on account of a disturbed sleep pattern after using drugs. An internet search carried out by a member of staff reveals that inhaling nitrous oxide is indeed common at certain clubs and rave parties, but it may be as safe as it seems, with one death attributed to a combination of nitrous oxide, alcohol and other drugs. The case is referred to the Health and Conduct Committee for consideration, and then to the University Fitness to Practise Committee. The point to consider is whether and when it is appropriate to make allowances or show tolerance in light of someone's lack of maturity.
