ABSTRACT

Historically, medical teaching was didactic. However, this was at a time when diagnosis depended almost entirely on clinical acumen, and little effective treatment was available. The teaching of medicine has now caught up with this rapid and continuing evolution in medical practice with the introduction of problem-based learning. This could be thought of as getting medical students to learn how to learn about medicine, in the knowledge that they are going to have to continue to learn, and thus adapt their practice of medicine until the day they retire. Problem-based learning encourages the peoples to think about the broader elements of medicine when formulating learning objectives from a scenario. However, exams require a different approach. It is essential to prioritise our thoughts, and marks are given for the important facts.
