ABSTRACT

Benign enlargement of the prostate is a common disease of males over the age of 65 years. It can cause unpleasant symptoms that can severely impair an individual’s quality of life. Reduced urinary flow is normally associated with frequency and urgency. It is important to exclude prostate cancer before proceding with treatment of Benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH). It is important to distinguish between urge incontinence, and involuntary and unexpected incontinenc. The International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS) is an internationally validated score. It is completed by patients to assess the severity of their symptoms (AUA score), and how these symptoms affect their quality of life (QoL score). The rate of urinary flow can be measured by either recording the volume of urine passed over a certain time, or more commonly by using a device known as a rotating disk mictiometer.
