ABSTRACT

In this chapter, reference is made to the design methodology used at the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Geosciences of Delft University of Technology. In the context of the subject “breakwaters and closure dams”, some aspects of the design process have been omitted from this book. It is assumed that certain decisions have already been taken at a different level, be it only on a preliminary basis. For the breakwater, these decisions concern the question whether a new port should indeed be built and, if so, at which location, and for what kind of traffic. For the closure dams discussion of the pros and cons of a closure, such as the environmental, social and other consequences, the location and function of the final dam, is beyond the scope of this book. This does not mean that no strategic choices have to be made. However, the strategic choices no longer refer to the questions of whether and where the structure should be built, but rather to how it should be built.
