ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview about product release planning. It describes release planning is positioned as part of a hierarchy of planning activities. The chapter presents an overview of the process and content of release planning. It explains some rigorous release planning methods. Planning of product releases is part of a hierarchy of planning activities. The planning onion describes the hierarchical relationship between the different objects of planning. The planning onion has an operational perspective at the core and gradually moves to a strategic perspective. Release planning needs to be continued as long as the product evolves. There has been progress in the capability to solve product release planning problems more systematically. To evaluate the current state-of-the-practice of product release planning, a survey and 25 semi-structured interviews with product and project managers were performed. All these subjects were involved in product release planning in their organization.
