ABSTRACT

We hope you have enjoyed this tour of micromaps and now have a vision of how you can put micromaps to work in exploring data and communicating with others. Micromaps organize and present statistical data in static, interactive, and dynamic formats. All of the micromap designs stress comparisons for exploration and integrate statistical information with the geographical context. By basing the design elements on the current understanding of our cognitive strengths and limitations, we remove some of the cognitive burden required to visually process and understand the micromap. This makes the designs easy to use. Also, the statistics included in micromaps are familiar to many people without an extensive statistical background, so most people should be able to use these designs.
