ABSTRACT

In their book Evolution of the Insects authors David Grimaldi and Michael Engel (2005) acknowledge that

In the two and half centuries since Linnaeus established a formalized process for naming and classifying species, scientific names have become the primary means for referencing a taxon whenever a piece of information is intended to refer unambiguously to a particular type of organism or group of organisms. The creation and management of these names is governed by formalized codes of nomenclature that seek to ensure conformity, mediate conflict, and ensure persistence and accuracy (ICZN, 1999). As a result, some of the names originally published in the 10th edition of Systema Naturae over 250 years ago (Linnaeus, 1758) continue to be used to refer to the same species today.
