Introduction

For many wastes, combustion (incineration) ultimately appeared as an attractive or necessary element of waste management. Occasionally, as for the incineration of fumes or essentially ash-free liquids or solids, combustion processes may properly be called disposal. For most solids and many liquids, incineration is only a processing step. Liquid or solid residues remain for subsequent disposal.
