ABSTRACT

Since the rst demonstration of an organic spintronic device in 2002, a great deal of work has been done on the subject of organic spintronics. Research groups experimented with a wide variety of materials to improve the performance of organic spintronic devices and to understand the fundamental physical mechanisms that underpin spin injection and transport in organic semiconductors. In this chapter we will take a different perspective and look at how organic spintronics can be used for applications. We will focus on memory and sensor devices, and we will compare their performance to that of their inorganic counterparts. We will show that, although organic spintronics hasn’t reached the level of performance of inorganic devices, it is approaching a stage at which it could enter into mainstream applications.
