ABSTRACT
LHE holds great promise for universities confronting increasingly resourceconstrained environments and greater expectations from those served by higher education. The application of LHE principles and practices described in this book provides a conceptual framework and set of strategies and tools for improving the efficiency and effectiveness of critical university processes. Figure 9.1 lists some of the benefits of LHE. The successful implementation of LHE provides the beneficiaries of the university-students, faculty, parents, employers, alumni, legislators, and others-with higher quality, more timely, less costly, and more convenient processes. The clear focus on meeting or exceeding the expectations of the different beneficiaries is a central tenet of LHE. Redesigning a process to deliver what a beneficiary values by removing waste and improving flow is fundamental to the application of LHE.
