ABSTRACT

Routing is a process used to predict the temporal and spatial variations of a ood hydrograph as it moves through a river reach or reservoir. The effects of storage and ow resistance within a river reach are reected by changes in both the shape and timing of the hydrograph as the ood wave moves from upstream to downstream. Figure 8.1 shows the major changes that occur to a discharge hydrograph as a ood wave moves downstream. In other words, the hydrograph depicts how a ood wave can be reduced in magnitude and lengthened in time by applying storage between the two points within the reach.
