ABSTRACT
Hydrologists have long known that only about one-fourth the total precipitation that falls on continental areas returns to the seas by direct runoff and underground ow. Evaporation from ocean surfaces is the chief source of moisture for precipitation, and probably no more than about 10% of continental precipitation can be attributed to continental evaporation.
