Although it is not mandatory, it is also helpful if the champion has a stake in the outcome, the proverbial “skin in the game.” If the champion’s budget or personal reputation is at risk, he or she will normally be a more effective advocate of change and will be viewed as having more credibility. It is, after all, easier to advocate change in another person’s department than to be willing to implement it within one’s own area of responsibility.
