ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the nature of transformational Lean leadership, effective management systems, and the information systems that support them. It also examines the importance of clear strategic intent in guiding a Lean transformation and explores the Lean management state of mind. The chapter describes the importance of leader standard work, and the essential Lean management systems from an IT perspective. Senior management must initiate the Lean transformation from the top-down, demonstrating a commitment to the long-term challenges that true and lasting change will pose. The management systems must work together, with information, human interactions, and decisions flowing at a stable and sustainable cadence. IT should be responsible for managing its capacity and efficient delivery of functionality, while business units and process owners should be responsible for the ultimate success of each project—including IT-based improvements and automation of the business process.
