The Lean IT and Business Partnership book
This chapter explores why IT has traditionally been overlooked in Lean initiatives and considers information wastes and their consequences. It discusses how Lean tools apply to information and information systems. Every business process relies on quality information and effective information systems, whether manual or electronic, as the flow of information supports the flow of work and the creation of value. Legacy systems are like organizational scar tissue–they form around injuries in the business processes, building layer upon layer of hardened procedures, and limiting flexibility of the process while causing pain. The IT organizations’ historical disengagement from Lean efforts is one of the root causes behind the failure of many enterprises to achieve a sustainable Lean transformation. The Lean principle of quality at the source means that data quality is everyone’s responsibility. Lean IT and Green IT are certainly complementary; in fact, many environmental benefits are realized simply as by-products of ongoing Lean IT improvement efforts.
