ABSTRACT

The word protein is derived from the Greek word protas, which means of primary importance. Proteins are complex, high molecular mass organic compounds that consist of amino acids joined with the help of peptide bonds. Proteins play a vital role in the structure and functioning of all living cells as well as viruses. Different types of proteins perform various kinds of functions. These include the function as enzymes where proteins catalyze or accelerate the chemical reaction without self-consumption. Other proteins play structural or mechanical roles. Other functions of proteins include immune response, where proteins identify and neutralize foreign objects like bacteria and viruses. They are also used for storage and transport of various ligands (atom, ion, or molecule).
