ABSTRACT
TryinHard Marine (THM) is headquartered in San Diego, California. It manufactures sophisticated electronic navigation systems for ocean-going civilian and military ships. The San Diego facility houses centralized corporate functions as well as manufactures one of THM’s “bread and butter” products, the OWow 123 NavSystem. Each site contains a sales function to service major shipbuilders and military installations. Each also manufactures its own product line. These are smaller facilities, with the number of employees ranging from 350 to 1,200. At one point in the conversation Mark Moore mentioned he had heard that their low cost competitor, BetterThanYou, was using an improvement program called Lean Six Sigma to achieve significant cost savings.
