ABSTRACT

In Chapter 2 of this book, de¤ciencies in the training of our law enforcement responders were explored. ese dedicated men and women do a very professional job under extremely trying and stressful conditions. ere are various ways some professional responders cope with the stresses of the job. Some of these are not very healthy, such as drinking, smoking and gambling, just to name a few. Others choose to deal with these issues by turning to humor, often referred to as “gallows humor.” e events seen-the injuries, the death, the pain, the constant reminder of just how cruel humans can be, and how tragic life can sometimes be all lead some responders to have a cynical and sarcastic outlook. ese people throw out comments in the face of these events that would astound most non-responders.
