ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Many process control plants are struggling with the dual challenges of increased regulatory requirements for safe and efficient operation and the expected retirement of a large population of its experienced workforce. Bringing new operators up to speed quickly to maintain safe and efficient operations is complicated by two factors. First, it is not clearly understood what constitutes an "expert" operator. Second, improvements in plant reliability and automation have greatly increased safety and efficiency. However, they also have reduced the number of abnormal events; thus reducing the number of opportunities operators have to build experiential knowledge. This paper details an effort that introduced Decision Making Exercises (DMXs), a cost-effective cognitive training solution, to the process control industry as a way to meet these challenges.
