ABSTRACT

This paper discusses a task analysis method developed to visually organize qualitative data collected using the 'Think Aloud' technique to investigate reading strategies on medicine inserts textual content, in order to improve results visualization and interpretation. Information content, graphic presentation and the text structure of medicine inserts in Brazil are investigated, considering patients' information reading strategies to verity difficulties and metacognitivc process through a qualitative approach. A study was conducted with six highly educated adult participants using the 'Think Aloud' technique, which is a cognitive approach. Each participant was interviewed individually and their answers were registered by digital audio recorder and in the presence of the researcher, which made a transcription of the recorded data for analysis. Thus, to interpret and obtain results through the collected data, a task analysis methodology was developed. The method proposes to visually organize 'Think Aloud' qualitative data into four categories: textual structure, graphic presentation, difficulties in order to improve the data visualization, examination and mainly to compare different participants' outcomes. According to the results, it is possible to say that the 'Think Aloud' and the task analysis method contribute to data collection regarding reading strategies on medicine inserts.
