ABSTRACT

Highly automated manufacturing systems are currently limited in their capabilities to adapt to changes in a product. They rely heavily on pre-programmed execution cycles. The introduction of cognitive abilities into manufacturing systems is a promising approach for improving the flexibility of these systems. In this paper a framework is proposed with supports the design and implementation of cognitive systems in a production environment. Furthermore the design of a knowledge compiler and the structure of the knowledge base will be introduced and a description of the use case in the assembly domain is given.
