ABSTRACT

This study was to construct the image quality models under different illumination levels and images through Group Method and Data Handling (GMDH). The models built the relationship between physical measurements and human perception. The results indicated that the effects of luminance, contrast, correlated color temperature (CCT), and resolution were significant on perceived image quality under 1500 lux. However, color temperature was not a significant physical characteristic and the interaction between luminance and resolution was found under 7000 lux. From the results of the experiment, it is considered that outdoor environment (7000 lux) may not be suitable for using mobile displays. Finally, once the image quality model is built, the human subjective ratings can be obtained if we imported the measurements of significant physical characteristics. The subjective ratings can be provided for mobile display manufacturers to improve the quality so that their products can really meet the customer requirements.
