ABSTRACT

In order to curve, the protons are subject to magnetic elds produced by 9,300 very large magnets. Because the protons move so fast, the magnetic elds must be extremely intense. eir production requires extremely large electric currents and low electrical resistances. Special superconducting magnets working at the extremely low temperature of –271°C (around –454°F) had to be built. is requires the world’s largest liquid helium cooling system. ere is no room for mistakes. If a problem occurs, one will have to heat things up to room temperature, make the appropriate repairs, and then cool things back down. is is exactly what happened shortly aer LHC was turned on, provoking a delay of more than a year.
