ABSTRACT
The philosophy behind the use of random effects models is quite different from that behind the use of the xed-effects models (discussed in the previous chapters) in both the sampling scheme and the parameters of interest. Before these differences are discussed, the de nitions of a random effect and a xed effect are given.
