ABSTRACT
Ion channels are involved in a large number of cell functions and in the induction of cellular responses to extracellular stimuli. There are three types of voltagesensitive ion channels: the sodium channel, the potassium channel, and the calcium channel. These function in a coordinated fashion in determining cellular responses to extraneous signals. The Na
channel is involved in the generation of action potentials and the K
channel is involved in the regulation of membrane potential and is significantly involved in synaptic plasticity.
