ABSTRACT

Microorganisms have been forming biolms for millions of years. However, the understanding and control of biolms is a relatively new area of study in microbiology. In fact, only as recent as ten years ago did researchers recognize the distinct phenotype of a biolm as the predominant type of bacterial life. In this chapter, the author will address the basics of biolm structure and the impact of biolms in equipment contamination and pharmaceutical production. The author will also address testing of sanitizer efcacy using biolm cells grown in a laboratory setting.
