ABSTRACT

Silent brain infarctions and white matter lesions are frequently observed in elderly subjects. It is estimated that 20 to 33% of the healthy elderly have silent brain infarctions43-45 and that, depending on the scoring method, 5 to 90% have white matter lesions46, the prevalence of which substantially increases with age43,44,47-49. These lesions are associated with cardiovascular risk factors43,50-52 and are considered to reflect small vessel pathology.
