ABSTRACT
The possibilities of terrestrial photogrammetry for glacier mapping were already recognized in the late 19th century, a few decades after the invention of photography. Those early photographs can be considered as the first attempts to use remote sensing in glaciology. The term terrestrial photogrammetry is used here to mean surveying or mapping from photographs taken by cameras placed on the ground.
