ABSTRACT

In a graphical sense, a discrete performance measure is basically represented by a “mark” on a line, bar, column, scatter plot, or similar chart. The mark in turn represents the intersection of some y and x value. Although such marks have significance in and of themselves, it is the interpretation of the mark and what is (or is not) done with that interpretation that truly adds value to any performance measurement system. Remember, the ultimate goal in measuring performance is to translate performance data into performance knowledge and associated meaning that in turn is effectively and successfully acted upon. In short, performance measurement systems should drive fact-based decision-making. As such, performance-based facts should drive performance-based actions.
