ABSTRACT

Whereas Six Sigma (described in Chapter 11) is a Lean tool that improves product quality by reducing process variation, 5S is another Lean tool that improves quality and productivity in a different way. 5S builds a foundation for a company to delivery high-quality products and services in the right quantity at the right time to satisfy and exceed customer requirements. It is key to creating a work environment that focuses on quality. 5S also creates a safer and more pleasant place to work. It makes it possible to increase productivity and improve quality. The term 5S is derived from fi ve Japanese terms for practices that lead to a clean and manageable work environment.
