ABSTRACT

It would be total chaos to study and document information about more than a quarter million species of vascular plants if there were no proper mechanism for grouping the same. Whatever may be the criterion for classification-artificial characters, overall morphology, phylogeny or phenetic relationshipthe basic steps are the same. The organisms are first recognized and assembled into groups on the basis of certain resemblance. These groups are in turn assembled into larger and more inclusive groups. The process is repeated until finally all the organisms have been assembled into a single, largest most inclusive group. These groups (Taxonomic groups or Taxa) are arranged in order of their successive inclusiveness, the least inclusive at the bottom, and the most inclusive at the top.
