ABSTRACT

Any botanical analysis of a plant necessitates the availability of information about its characteristics. The descriptive information about the morphology of a plant (phytography) is suitably expressed in semitechnical language through a set of terms, which provide an unambiguous representation of the plant. The descriptive terminology thus precedes any taxonomic or phylogenetic analysis of a taxon. Whereas the vegetative morphology of vascular plants (Tracheophyes) uniformly includes information about the organs such as root, stem as leaves, the reproductive morphology may differ in different groups. The Pteridophytes are represented by strobili, cones, sporophylls, microsporophylls, megasporophylls and spores, Gymnosperms by cones, megasporophylls, microsporophylls and seeds. The flowering plants have distinct inflorescences, flowers, seeds and fruits. All these organs show considerable variability, amply depicted through a large vocabulary of descriptive terms.
