ABSTRACT

Alcohol and gambling are typically enjoyed by almost any gaming patron. Selling or providing complimentary alcohol to customers is a practice that has been around since legalized gambling began in 1931 in Nevada. The courts have established, on numerous occasions, that this combination creates a fertile environment for some criminal activity, which includes alcohol-related crimes such as driving while intoxicated and being drunk in public. Along with the service of alcohol comes a certain amount of responsibility or legal duty that a casino has to its patrons (Figure 12.1).
