ABSTRACT

There is a great deal of information on the behavior of salts in soils and in soil solution suspensions. However, mostofthisresearchappliestosoilsinaridregions, whichareoftenalkalineandconsist primarilyof2:1clayminerals.Intemperateregions,soilsareoftenhighlyweathered,acidic,their mineralogyoxidic,withmixedclaymineralogy(1:1plus2:1clayminerals),andthe2:1mineralsarehighlyinterlayered.Thereisaneedtounderstandtheeffectsofsaltsonsoilsintemperate regions because these soils can become salt-affected from anthropogenic sources.
