ABSTRACT

Desiccation-tolerant (poikilohydric) plants represent a unique group of organisms, which are able towithstandlossofwatertoanair-drystateandtosurviveextendedperiodsofseverewaterdecit [1,2].Poikilohydryisarelativelycommonphenomenoninnonvasculartaxasuchaslichens,algae, andbryophytes,butonly74pteridophytesand145angiospermsbelongtotheseso-calledresurrectionplants[3].Inadesiccatedstate,theirphysiologicalfunctions,includingphotosyntheticactivity completely ceased, but during rehydration this activity can be fully restored, with different rates in homoiochlorophyllous(HDT)andinpoikilochlorophyllous(PDT)desiccation-tolerantplants[4,5].
