Environmental stresses present major challenges in our quest to achieve sustainable food production.Thereactionsofplantstoenvironmentalstressesarecomplexandinvolveawidearrayof physiologicalandbiochemicalresponses.Suchresponsesareinitiatedbyplantsgrowinginstressed environmentstoovercome,avoid,ornullifytheeffectsofstresses.Toleranceorsensitivitytowarda particularstressfulconditiondependsonthegeneticandbiochemicalmakeupofthespecies.Much attention has been focused during recent years to evolve crop species with adaptability built into their genetic and biochemical makeup to withstand various stressful environmental conditions.
