ABSTRACT

The gradual progress of desertication due to detrimental effects of natural stress factors such as lowprecipitation,long-termdrought,heat,anderosioncoupledwithimproperhumanactivitiesas aresultofovergrazing,overutilizationoflandandtheapplicationofinsufcientmanagementdecisionsandimproperagriculturalpractices,urbanization,andindustrialactivitieshasleftextensive arablelandsatpotentialriskofconversiontounusablesoils.Theseproblemsaremoresevereinarid and semiarid regions whose soils already encounter salinity and sodicity problems, and are more vulnerable to stress conditions.
