ABSTRACT

Acacia ampliceps Maslin. (commonly called salt wattle, jila jila, nyarlka [Australia]; Australian “katin”[Thailand];Australian“kikar”[Pakistan])isalargedenseshruborsmall,relativelyshortlivedtree(2-9mtall)withoneormultiplestemsandaspreadingcanopycomposedofbranchletsthat areoftenpendulousandyellowish.Thebarkisroughgray-brownfor1-2mfromthebase,becomingsmoothlightgreen-brownish.Phyllodesarelineartolanceolate(7-25cmlongand0.7-3cm wide),shinygreen,withaprominentyellowmidrib.Theglobular…owersarewhiteorcream,and appearinMaytoAugustinAustralia(OctoberinThailand;January-FebruaryinUAE;FebruaryMarchinPakistan).Podsarehard,gray-brown(7-10cmlongand0.5cmwide),slightlyconstricted betweentheseeds,maturinginAugusttoNovemberinAustralia(March-MayinThailand;JuneJulyinUAE;July-AugustinPakistan).Seedsaregraytoblackwitharedaril.Thereareabout35 viableseedspergram.MoredetaileddescriptionsareprovidedbyDoranandTurnbull(1997)and ChapmanandMaslin(2001).Floweringandseedproductionarenormallyprolicintherst1-2 years after planting in Thailand and Pakistan (Marcar et al. 1998, Yuvaniyama 2009).
