ABSTRACT

In the minds of today’s scienti–c and lay majority, the basis of future therapies resulting from stem cell research is that master cells capable of giving rise to the various tissues of the body can be used to replace speci–c cell types lost as a result of aging or disease. However, lurking behind the basic premise of cell replacement therapy are a host of scienti–c and commercial dif–culties that complicate the stem cell’s path to market, transforming an apparently simple concept into a risky reality.
