ABSTRACT

Will You Teach Us? In June 2006, Dr. Gary Kaplan traveled from Seattle, Washington, to Newcastle upon Tyne, England, set on the North Sea coast 300 miles north of London, a sixteen-hour journey covering 6,000 miles. Dr. Kaplan’s trip to Newcastle came at the invitation of physicians working within the Northeast region of Britain’s National Health Service (NHS). NHS Northeast is a sprawling organization, one of the ten Strategic Health Authorities in Britain serving as administrative regions of the NHS. e group of physicians and health care leaders Kaplan was here to address were responsible for taking care of 2.5 million Britons in a geographic area running as far north as the Scottish border. e area included eight hospitals, mental health trusts, and a dozen primary care organizations.
