ABSTRACT

Distributed sensors measure over lines, curves, areas, and/or volumes and have capabilities and measurement modalities that extend beyond those of isolated point sensors or arrays of point sensors. Figure 3.1 shows a combinatorial classification of distributed sensors based on geometry, dimension, imaging modality, placement technique, and physical operating principle. Distributed sensing typically requires more technical sophistication than point sensors. However, in many cases, the superior performance outweighs the increased costs.
