ABSTRACT

Debris is the accumulation of particles and fibrous material (including hairs) that results from the processes occurring in an environment or around a person. Examples of debris on clothing include dust and lint. A trace is usually a small, even microscopic, transfer of a substance left on an object either by contact with another object, person, or animal or by projection from one object or being onto another. For example, if someone leans against a tree, traces of bark and the things that live on it may transfer to the person’s clothing. Projected material is deposited from fragmentation, such as glass shattering or seed pods exploding. Traces and debris found on clothing form a continuum rather than two discrete categories and are thus combined in this chapter.
