ABSTRACT

We will now briefly examine one of the major recipients of communal demand and the subsequent demand it creates for downstream capacity (remember, capacity herein refers to space, resources, equipment, and other requirements for patient care). The emergency department (ED) and surgical services are two of the largest sources of inpatient capacity demand, followed by the other, smaller sources such as direct admissions, cath lab, and external and internal transfers. In this chapter, we will begin to discuss the discernable patterns of demand generated from these departments, what it means for dynamic capacity requirements, and how dynamic capacity analysis, matching, and management (DCAMM) analytics can help in ongoing system and component management.
