ABSTRACT

Let’s shift our focus to the nuts and bolts aspects of leadership that can greatly impact workflow. As alluded to earlier, leaders can become so preoccupied with reacting to owner demands and pushing out deliverables that they can unwittingly worsen project flow by not attending to what I call the basics. By not taking the time to set up the job properly, they inadvertently prime it to be reactive. As people flail about in organizational uncertainty, they react to issues that come up as if they were wild fires, rather than taking the time to anticipate and plan for them. In the process, leaders find themselves pushing inadequately experienced or trained people to produce a product that is well beyond their capabilities. The result is an end product that is woefully lacking in quality, and an owner who is less than thrilled with the result.
