ABSTRACT

One cannot understand the measurement in aviation human factors (HF) without knowing a little about its history, which goes back to World War I and even earlier. In that period, new aircraft were tested at fl ight shows and selected partly on the basis of the pilot’s opinion. Th e test pilots were the great fi ghter aces, men like Guynemer and von Richtoff en. Such tests were not the tests of the pilot’s performance as such, but examined the pilot and his reactions to the aircraft .
