ABSTRACT
This chapter focuses on the speci cation and design of controls for medical devices. A control is de ned as a device component used to alter how a device functions. The guidelines presented here address traditional “control panel” controls, such as rotary knobs and toggle switches; “input devices” for electronic equipment, such as mice and touch screens; and larger control mechanisms, often of a strictly mechanical nature, such as cranks and handwheels.
