ABSTRACT

In the past 60 years, a large body of literature on the management of operating theaters has evolved. MagerleinandMartin(1978)reviewtheliteratureonsurgicaldemandschedulinganddistinguish betweenadvanceschedulingandallocationscheduling.Advanceschedulingistheprocessoffixinga surgerydateforapatient,whereasallocationschedulingdeterminestheoperatingroom(OR)andthe startingtimeoftheprocedureonthespecificdayofsurgery.BlakeandCarter(1997)elaborateonthis taxonomyintheirliteraturereviewandaddthedomainofexternalresourcescheduling,whichthey defineastheprocessofidentifyingandreservingallresourcesexternaltothesurgicalsuitenecessary toensureappropriatecareforapatientbeforeanda·eraninstanceofsurgery.Ÿeyfurthermoredivide eachdomaininastrategic,administrative,andoperationallevel,althoughtheseboundariesmaybe vagueandinterrelated.Przasnyski(1986)structurestheliteratureonORschedulingbasedongeneral areasofconcern,suchascostcontainmentorschedulingofspecificresources.Recently,Cardoenetal. (2010)studiedcontributionsonORplanningandschedulingfrommultipleperspectives,suchasperformancemeasures,appliedsolutiontechnique,uncertaintyincorporation,ordecisiondelineation,which they refer to as descriptive fields.
