ABSTRACT

As was the case for the preceding chapter on speech technologies, providing a comprehensive description of the various aspects of human language and communication-from the mechanics of speech production to speech comprehension to the social use of language-is beyond the scope of this book, much less this chapter. For a readable and entertaining introduction to linguistics and psycholinguistics, see Pinker (1994). Clark (1996, 2004) provides information on pragmatics, and West and Turner (2010) introduce communication theory. This chapter focuses on 10 concepts that are useful for practitioners who work with speech user interface (SUI) designs.
